Similitudes and inspirations
What is striking in my drawings is that they really look like existing European cities, but that is only an impression as nothing is copied: not architecture, not one bridge, not a single urban element is reproduced.
I don’t intend to represent a” perfect” or ideal “city”. I look at cities as they are. I watch their imperfections, their failures and without any limits, I invent new ones in my drawings. I take my inspiration from cities I know well, Toulouse, Paris, Barcelona and more largely from all the cities I have the opportunity to visit. My precise observations enable me to organize my imaginary cities.
I am interested in all sorts of architecture: classical architecture and contemporary architecture: cathedrals, railway stations, theatres, hospitals, administrative buildings… Every building has its style, its history and I reproduce those particularities as part of a re-invented history but testifying of a rich past: roman and gothic churches, the steel roof of a station, concrete or art-deco buildings…
I sometimes have to invent architectural solutions: for example how a port is organized. My inventions can correspond to a reality or can be totally utopian. In addition to my passion and my observations, I rely on my knowledge in art history.
